Spyderco's Delica and Endura models are two of the most popular and widely used folding knives in history. These groundbreaking designs pioneered the concept of the lightweight, clip-carry, one-hand-opening folding knife and were instrumental in establishing injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) as a handle material.
Since their debut in 1990, the Delica and Endura Lightweights have steadily evolved to arrive at the current fourth-generation versions. Now available in a broad range of blade steels, grinds, edge configurations, and handle colors, these iconic models are considered by many to be about as perfect as working knives can be. But when it comes to knives, "perfect" is always in the eyes—and the hands—of the beholder.
To be honest, there really is no "one-size-fits-all" knife. Everyone's hand size and shape are slightly different, and each of us has our own preferred grips and working style. Similarly, the laws regarding blade length in the areas where we live and travel may limit the types of knives we carry. And when you get right down to it, for some folks the Delica may simply "seem" a little too small, while the Endura just "feels" a bit too big. That's ok because now there's a third option: the Endela.
Carefully designed to literally split the difference between the best-selling Endura 4 and Delica 4, the Endela faithfully maintains all the highly refined, time-tested features of each, but in the perfect "in-between" size. Its satin finished blade is crafted from HAP40 and SUS410 steel and proudly features a fully accessible Trademark Round Hole for ambidextrous one-hand opening. The full-flat-ground blade is available with a PlainEdge, and includes an area of jimping (textured grooves) just behind the Round Hole for a solid thumb purchase during use. Like its bigger and smaller brothers, the Endela's blade is supported by a sturdy back lock mechanism that includes a Boye Dent to help prevent unintentional lock release.
The Pakkawood material that makes up the scales combines the durability and stability of a phenolic laminate with the rich beauty of natural wood. Unlike natural wood, you won't have to worry so much about Pakkawood shrinking, expanding, or cracking. It is also much better suited to moisture than standard woods. Full stainless steel liners, backspacer, and lock back complete this durable little knife. A David Boye dent on the lock release makes it less susceptible to accidental disengagement.
Compared to the Delica and Endura, the Endela features a prominent blade belly, which increases the slicing and slashing capabilities. The Endela works well for everyday carry, but can put in some serious work around a campsite, on a fishing expedition, or even in the kitchen.
The body and pivot screws all feature a rounded satin finish on the presentation side, providing an excellent contrast to the smooth Pakkawood. The appearance feels more akin to a gentleman's knife, while performance lends itself to hard-use tasks where lesser knives would fail. If you're looking for a gentleman's knife that can work as hard as you and looks great while doing it, then the Endela with Pakkawood handles is the perfect choice for you.
Overall, the Endela feels incredible in the hand. The handle curvature provides a solid grip and the rounded edges ensure there are little-to-no hotspots, so this hard-use folder lets you truly focus on your work instead of worrying about hand fatigue. The blade opens easily both one-handed and two-handed and makes an extremely satisfying click when the black locks into place. While traditionally, lockbacks have been made to be closed with two hands, the Endela can be opened and closed with one hand with some practice.
The ambidextrous nature of lockback knives is aided on the Endela due to the blade hole that Spyderco is known by. With a simple adjustment of pocket clip location, this knife can be carried in any pocket and operated in either hand comfortably and reliably. If you're not a fan of pocket clips, then remove it entirely and allow more of the gorgeous Pakkawood to be seen.
No matter what exact form it takes, we are confident the Endela will prove to be a worthy companion to the Delica and Endura and a proud continuation of their legacy.
